Leaf surface stomata from the Ohia Lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha). Stomata (plural of stoma) are tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant that are surrounded by pairs of crescent-shaped cells, called guard cells, that facilitate gas exchange. Ohia Lehua is Hawaii's most abundant native tree. It is often the first tree life to appear after a lava flow. It can survive in a many environments, including elevations between 1,000 and 9,000 feet above sea level. It is a hardwood that was used by ancient Hawaiians to carve temple idols, canoes, poi bowls and spears.
