Bagworm moth compound eye (Brachycyttarus griseus). The compound eye is composed of numerous facets (ommatidia), each of which contains a suface lens. Beneath each lens are retinal cells, which send nerve signals to the optic nerve. The ommatidia are often hexagonal in shape and are tightly arranged to form a large compound eye. Compound eyes allow for the detection of small movements but are weak in distinguishing fine details.
