Brachyspira pilosicoli - anaerobic, spirillum bacterium (prokaryote)

Image Number: 26266A

Caption:

Brachyspira pilosicoli - anaerobic, Gram-negative, spirillum bacterium (prokaryote). Brachyspira pilosicoli formerly known as Serpulina pilosicoli belongs in the order to the order Spirochaetaceae. Brachyspira spp. are common spirochetes. B. pilosicoli causes intestinal or colonic spirochetosis, a mild colitis and diarrhea in pigs and poultry. Spirochetes lack a rigid cell wall and move by flexing of the cell producing a spiral action. B. pilosicoli also is a common organism in developing countries and among immuno-suppressed human patients. The significance in causing disease in humans has been more prevalent in the past decade, especially with diarrhea and wasting.
