Fresh water pennate diatom frustule (skeleton) found in a polluted stream. Often diatoms can be used as indicator species to determine the extent of polluted waters. As water becomes polluted, two things usually happen -- species diversity lowers, and population density of the remaining species increases (often indicated by certain diatom species occurring in high density).
